Brother Jordan Coonen, OP, 84

“Our ministries often face deep financial challenges—even struggling to meet basic living expenses. We rely on the generosity of donors, especially friends and family, whose support sustains our work when resources are scarce. Their giving isn’t just helpful—it’s vital,” shares Brother Jordan Coonen, 84, who has devoted 65 years of service as a Dominican Brother in Chicago, Illinois.

Born into a devout family in Little Chute, Wisconsin, Brother Jordan, the third oldest of eight children, was deeply influenced by his mother’s unwavering faith and dedication.

The Racine Dominican Sisters, who staffed the Catholic schools he attended, were one of the sources of his earliest inspirations. Sister Marie Therese, OP, provided encouragement that significantly shaped his decision to embrace religious life.

Following graduation from St. John High School, a pivotal visit to Chicago introduced Brother Jordan to the Dominican Order. Drawn by the Order’s deep commitment to prayer, community living, and meaningful service, he joined the Dominicans shortly after his visit in 1960, marking the beginning of an impactful religious vocation.

Brother Jordan’s ministry led him to parish communities in Chicago, Denver, and Madison, Wisconsin. His work was both practical and inspirational, guiding youth programs, overseeing essential parish maintenance, serving as a sacristan, and assisting with funeral masses while also sharing his creative talents by teaching crafts.

Today, in retirement, Brother Jordan remains actively engaged within a large Dominican community, continuing his lifelong commitment to fellowship, prayer, and creativity. He finds special joy and spiritual fulfillment in crafting thread crosses, which have become beloved gifts treasured by friends and former parishioners nationwide.

Brother Jordan draws ongoing strength from the beloved hymn, “On Eagle’s Wings.” Its main message provides daily comfort, prompting him to share with a gentle smile, “It reminds me I’m still being lifted up.”

This sentiment beautifully captures his continued journey of faith and devotion, knowing he remains firmly guided by the loving hands of God.
