Sister Diane De Carli, MSCS, 86

“Your generosity is more than a gift—it’s a grace. Because of you, we are cared for in our later years with dignity and love. I thank God for you each day in my prayers,” reflects Sister Diane De Carli, MSCS, an 86-year-old member of the Missionary Sisters of St. Charles Borromeo (Scalabrinian) community in Melrose Park, Illinois.

Born on September 1, 1939, Sister Diane grew up in Brazil in a large family with five boys and six girls, raised by devoted parents who fostered a spirit of faith and togetherness.

Sister Diane attended Catholic school, where she began to develop a deeper understanding of people, children, and the world around her. This early foundation helped nurture the compassion and joy that would define her ministry.

At the young age of 12, Sister Diane entered as an aspirant with the Scalabrinian Sisters, inspired by her older brother, who was studying for the priesthood at the Scalabrini Seminary. His encouragement, along with the example of her family and community, guided her toward religious life.

She then pursued higher education at Loyola University, earning a Master of Pastoral Studies to deepen her ability to serve others.

Over 36 years of active ministry, she worked in schools and catechetical programs, where her faithfulness and care left lasting impressions. She describes this time as very happy, faithful, and fruitful.

Even in retirement, Sister Diane continues to embody the spirit of her vocation. She finds peace and connection with God through nature, walking, and the simple acts of helping one another.

Her favorite prayers, including Psalms 103 and 146, and beloved hymns such as “Here I Am, Lord” and “How Great Thou Art,” continue to help her feel connected with God, alongside the Holy Communion prayer she holds dear.
