Sister Olivia Bellegante, OSF, 92

“Thank you very much for your donations, always,” says Sister Olivia Bellegante, 92, a member of the Franciscan Sisters of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in St. Louis, Missouri. “Since most of the sisters are getting older and not working anymore, it is difficult. It is a help to them; without it, I’m not sure that they could survive.”

Born and raised in Sopris, Colorado, one of eight children, Sister Olivia grew up in a modest family. Their mother’s faith and commitment to the Catholic Church left a lasting impression on Sister Olivia, who fondly remembers her mother’s daily recitations of the Rosary for her children’s well-being.

While Sister Olivia did not attend Catholic school, her upbringing instilled in her a deep faith, nurtured by monthly Masses and the occasional visits of Jesuit priests.

Her journey into religious life began in June 1962, when she entered The Franciscan Sisters of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, inspired by the kindness and joy she witnessed among the sisters in her town.

After entering the convent, she attended Marillac College in Normandy, Missouri, where she received her Bachelor of Arts in education, beginning her lifelong ministry of teaching.

Throughout her 40 years of teaching in Catholic schools, Sister Olivia touched the lives of countless students, imparting not only knowledge but also values of compassion and service.

Among the many highlights of her ministry, Sister Olivia cherishes memories of field trips with her students, where laughter and learning intertwined to create memorable experiences. Her favorite prayer, the Prayer of St. Francis, guides her life philosophy of being an instrument of peace and joy in the world.

When asked about the secret to a long and fulfilling life, Sister Olivia’s answer is simple yet profound: “Be happy. Accept what God has given you.
